Velshonna Luckey, of South Bend, is a woman who can get things done. She is the youth development program director at the Robinson Community Learning Center. For her good work in tutoring, mentoring and believing in the people in the neighborhood, she was given the Indiana Torchbearer Award from the Indiana Commission for Women. Fourteen Torchbearer awards were presented earlier in March.

But it gets better. She was one of four who were given the Heart of Indiana Award for her service.

She said it was all a blur. Velshonna knew about the Torchbearer but the Heart award was a complete surprise. “They were talking about special recognition for some women and my picture showed up on the screen. They said we were diamonds in the community. It was most exciting.”

Velshonna was happy to share the day with her two nieces, Charell Luckey, a sophomore at Butler University, and Tamera Bruce, who is an eighth-grader at Clay.

Her work at Robinson Center is for the children to tutor. “We prepare them to be leaders and parents. That is the most important work. The children are our future.”
