CommUniversity Day

Author: Jennifer Knapp Beudert

The fifth annual CommUniversity will be held on Saturday, April 6th.  This day of service brings together students from Notre Dame and St. Mary’s, as well as Holy Cross College, IUSB, and Ivy Tech. Last year over 650 student volunteers as well as many community members worked together on projects throughout South Bend, ranging from painting fire hydrants, to preparing gardens, to cleaning up parks, to marking storm drains to discourage pollution--over 45 projects in all. This year’s list of projects is currently being developed in collaboration with the City of South Bend Public Works and Parks Department. Further information will soon be available about how to sign up on-line for specific projects.

CommUniversity Day is also about celebrating our community. The day begins with the Homeward Bound Walk/5K Run, which benefits local agencies that fight homelessness. That event takes place at the Robinson Center, with registration beginning at 8:30am (http://homewardboundindiana.org/st-joseph-county) . At noon, bus tours of the ND campus, the Natatorium, and the Notre Dame Center for Arts and Culture will depart from the Robinson Center (call Marguerite Taylor at 574-631-9425 to register) . Children can enjoy an afternoon of activities at the Irish Experience Kids Festival on campus. The day culminates with a picnic for all participants at 3pm at the Robinson Center—plenty of food, music, and fun for all!
