The Notre Dame Center for Arts and Culture will host four week-long summer day camps for middle school children. The series, including art, cooking, photography, and creative writing, is connected with an exhibit of the mural “Ecuador,” by Oswaldo Guayasamín.
“The overarching theme is Identity, since that is what the Guayasamín piece deals with,” says Jennifer Wittenbrink Ortega, director of the literacy program at the center. “This is the first time that this piece has been seen outside of South America, and our children will get a sneak peek at the five panels this summer. Additionally, at the grand opening on Sept. 3, the work the students create during camps will be on display alongside Guayasamín’s.”
The camps are:
* Art, June 16-20. Students will explore different mediums and different artists, such as Pollock, and visit the Segura Art Studio in the center to learn about printmaking. They will create their own panels with the theme of identity.
* Cooking, June 23-27. Students will prepare traditional cuisines from around the world, including hummus, sushi, breads, and fondant.
* Photography, June 30-July 3. Students will learn about composition, perspective, and post-processing. They will create a piece on identity and a digital journal.
* Creative writing, July 7-11. Students will write poetry, short stories, and other pieces, as well as working on the editing process.
The focus on Guayasamín’s work at the camps is part of a two-month long Arts in Motion series on the Notre Dame campus and the Notre Dame Center for Arts and Culture. Tatiana Botero-Jáuregui of the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures is leading the effort.
The camps will run from 9 a.m. to noon at the center, 1045 W. Washington St. in South Bend. Cost is $12 per week per child. The center will host an Enrollment Open House from 4-6 p.m. June 3. For more information, visit artsandculture.nd.edu/educational-programs, or call 574.631.1968.
