Teachers As Scholars: Notre Dame experts aim to inspire local teachers
After attending the Teachers as Scholars Spring 2017 seminar: "Everyone Can Become a Design Thinker" taught in collaboration with Professor Ann-Marie Conrado, Professor Wendy Angst, and Professor James Schmiedeler, Mary Joyce DeVirgilio applied what she learned directly into her classroom. Mary Joyce DeVirgilio asked her fifth-grade students to work in teams to design a dream house for her – allowing the fantasy that cost is not an issue for a Catholic school teacher.

Nature in America
After his seminar on “Nature in America,” Professor Tom Schlereth helped the John Young Middle School teachers and students plant several gardens that have influenced the curricula in mathematics, science, and art, among other disciplines.

A Revolution in Fiction
As an outcome of her seminar, “The French Revolution: a Cultural Approach,” Professor Julia Douthwaite invited her teacher/scholars to create visual and textual representations of their impressions of the place of women in the French Revolution.

Notre Dame seminar for educators explores how popular culture, media shape ideas about race
Part of Teachers as Scholars, a program that brings local educators together to study, discuss and reflect upon scholarly issues with Notre Dame professors, the two-day seminar analyzed how society frames race as a social problem through popular culture, from movies and TV to books and, increasingly, social media.
